JUNIORS- PRIMARY, MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL

Students start their education in primary school from the age of 6-7 depending on the region. High school starts in the 8th year of education and lasts 5 years, and students pass the final exams at the age of 17. Children usually go to school from the age of five or six and study in primary school for six or seven years, followed by 10 years in high school.

The next two years in high school (classes 11 and 12) are optional. Primary – primary school education lasts for 7 or 8 years Secondary- secondary education starts with 7th or 8th grade and lasts up to 10th grade.

Senior Secondary – the period of upper secondary education is 2 years (11th and 12th grade). Final exams students pass after the 12th grade and this exam is also an exam for vocational studies and courses (VET).

Instead of classes in the 12th grade, students can choose the so-called Foundation Year, which is an annual preparatory program for international students planning to study at the university. These programs are run by universities and include not only English language education but also a general introduction to academic subjects. Often, parents from countries outside Australia send their children to private schools for the entire school year to learn English while at the same time completing their next year in primary or secondary school. Usually, during such a trip, the child will have a guardian who will be able to support the child’s educational development and be in contact with parents.

What to look for when choosing a school?

Schools are divided into public and paid private schools, which are further classified as Catholic and private. For foreigners, the availability of places in public schools and fees will vary depending on the state of residence and type of visa. When choosing a school, you should check the size of the school, the number of teachers per student, the results obtained by students in NAPLAN exams (exam checking the level of language skills and knowledge of mathematics).

Further learning opportunities.

Most schools, apart from the so-called General English (general language skills at various levels), offers EAP (English for Academic Purposes), specialist (e.g. medical or business English) courses, as well as exam preparation IELTS, TOEFL, OET and Cambridge ESOL (PET , FCE, CAE and CPE).

Recruitment to schools. The school year in primary and secondary schools begins in the last days of January and lasts until mid-December. During the Polish winter, children in Australia have about 6 weeks summer vacation. The school year is divided into 4 terms (semesters), each of which lasts 9 to 11 weeks (together it is about 40 weeks of study per year). Between semesters children have a two-week vacation. Joining a class is possible at any time.
